How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Appointment
Getting tattooed, especially for a larger session, is easier on both your body and your skin when you come prepared. Proper prep can improve comfort, help the tattoo process go smoother, and support better healing afterward.
In the Days Leading Up to Your Appointment
Hydrate
Start drinking extra water 2–3 days before your appointment. Hydrated skin takes ink better and generally handles tattooing more comfortably.
Moisturize Your Skin
Healthy skin tattoos best. Begin moisturizing the area daily a few days beforehand using a basic, unscented lotion. Avoid heavily fragranced products or anything exfoliating.
Avoid Sunburns & Skin Damage
Please avoid:
- Sunburns
- Tanning beds
- Peeling or damaged skin
- Heavy exfoliation
- Chemical peels on the area
We cannot tattoo compromised skin.
Avoid Excessive Alcohol & Partying
Alcohol can thin the blood and make tattooing more difficult. Avoid drinking heavily the night before your appointment.
Avoid Blood Thinners When Possible
If medically safe for you, avoid unnecessary blood-thinning products before your appointment, such as:
- Alcohol
- Excessive caffeine
- Aspirin
Never stop prescribed medications without speaking to your doctor first.
The Night Before
- Get a good night's sleep
- Shower and arrive clean
- Pack snacks and water
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Charge your phone/headphones if needed
Large tattoo sessions are physically demanding. Treat it like preparing for a long day.
The Day Of Your Appointment
Eat a Proper Meal
Please do not arrive on an empty stomach. Low blood sugar can cause:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Shaking
- Fainting
- Poor pain tolerance
A balanced meal beforehand helps tremendously.
Stay Hydrated
Bring water or electrolytes to sip throughout the session.
Bring Snacks
Especially for longer appointments. Good options include:
- Protein bars
- Fruit
- Trail mix
- Sandwiches
- Electrolyte drinks
Wear Appropriate Clothing
Wear clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area and that you don't mind potentially getting ink on.
Examples:
- Tank tops for arms/shoulders
- Shorts for legs
- Loose clothing for large pieces
Skin Preparation
Should I Shave Before My Appointment?
No need — we'll take care of shaving the area safely if needed. Please avoid dry shaving beforehand, as irritation can affect the skin.
Avoid Heavy Lotion Right Before
Light moisturizer in the days before is great, but avoid applying excessive lotion, oils, or self-tanner immediately before your appointment.
Do Not Arrive With Numbing Cream Unless Discussed First
Some numbing products can affect the skin texture and the tattooing process. If you're considering using numbing cream, please discuss it with your artist beforehand.
For Large Scale Sessions
For full day appointments or larger projects:
- Bring entertainment (headphones, podcasts, movies)
- Bring additional snacks/meals
- Expect to feel tired afterward
- Plan for a relaxing evening after your appointment
Tattooing is physically taxing, especially over multiple hours.
